Accra, June 23, GNA – Mrs Elizabeth Kwaatso Sackey, Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has cut sod for the construction of a multi-purpose abattoir at James Town in Accra.
The abattoir, when completed, would reduce vehicular movement of butchers in the metropolis and serve as a major hub for the preparation of animals for public consumption.
The contract, awarded to FORAC LIMITED, is expected to be completed in 12 months, and comes with an off-loading bay, veterinary office, changing rooms, store, washrooms, freezing bays, slaughtering and slamming area, cattle lairage, animal drinking pond and a kraal to keep the animals for examination.
Mrs Sackey, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, said the facility when completed would guarantee the production of wholesome meat and public health.
She said the project formed part of the AMA’s aim of ensuring the provision of quality meat sold to the public, hence the need to engage the stakeholders in a series of meeting to ensure the facility befits the status of an abattoir.
She also had in mind the prospect of job creation for the people of James Town and its environs, adding that, “we are serious about this work in the community because the youth will get job to do to improve their economic lives.”
The metropolitan chief Executive expressed the hope that the facility would also position and restore the area to its original status as a major meat hub in the area.
She urged the contractor to work hard, stressing that she would ensure uninterrupted work.
Nii Ayite Konko V, Wulomo (Priest) of Ngleshie, who was elated about the project, expressed appreciation to the mayor for the idea to revive the slaughterhouse and pledged support towards it.
Present at the event were executives of the London Market Butchers Association, representatives of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council and the Ga Traditional Council.
