Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/R), June 28, GNA – A Circuit Court at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Bono Region has sentenced Ernest Appiah, 28, and unemployed, to two years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing a pair of berk slipper valued at GhC70 and cash of GhC80.
Appiah pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea on three counts of causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.
Police Inspector (P/Inspt.) Emmanuel Asare, the prosecutor told the court presided over by Mr Samuel Djanie Kotey that the complainant, a trader/farmer resided at ABB, a suburb of Dormaa- Ahenkro with the convict but are relatives and native of Aboabo Number One in the municipality.
He stated that on a few occasions the complainant had received complaints of theft cases alleged to have been committed by the accused person who usually came home late and had been warned to desist from such acts.
P/Inspt. Asare said on Saturday, May 28 this year about 1800 hours, the complainant returned from the market and detected that the amount and the footwear concealed in a backpack in her room were missing.
The complainant was informed by a witness that he saw the accused person using a kitchen knife to force her window open, the prosecutor said and added that the complainant, therefore, went behind her window and saw that the lock affixed to the window valued at GhC60 had been damaged.
P/Inspt. Asare said the complainant went around searching for the accused person but to no avail until Friday, June 03 this year when the latter came back to the house and stole a bag of charcoal valued at GhC60.00 that belonged to the former.
He indicated the youth within the vicinity attacked the accused person and subjected him to severe beatings, adding that the Police received a distress call that the accused person had been arrested and was about to be lynched.
The prosecutor said the Police, therefore, went to his rescue and brought him to the Police Station, saying that he admitted the offence during interrogation.
P/Inspt. Asare said the accused person explained it was due to hunger that was why he kept on stealing to feed himself and buy clothes too.
He was charged accordingly after investigations, the prosecutor concluded.
