Report: Germany to allow dissident Russians to stay without asylum

Berlin, Jun. 6, (dpa/GNA) – The German government is planning to allow around 70 Russian dissidents to live and work in Germany without having to apply for asylum, according to a report in Der Spiegel news magazine on Monday.

Citing government sources, Der Spiegel said the move would apply to journalists and others critical of President Vladimir Putin’s policies who had fled to Germany using 90-day visas for the Schengen free-travel zone in Europe.

The federal government was consulting with the authorities in the states of Berlin and Saxony, among others, the magazine reported.

The government aimed to allow media and creative people “critical of the regime” the opportunity to continue their work in Germany, Der Spiegel, said, citing a report from a task force that will report to the cabinet at its regular Wednesday session.
