Accra, May 29, GNA- Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC have ended the unbeaten run of Southern Zone Champions, Hasaacas Ladies 5-3 on penalties to win the 2021/2022 Women’s Premier League (WPL) title.
After the regulation time ended 1-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, Ampem Darkoa did not lose sight of their ambition to beat the defending champions to clinch the coveted trophy.
Spot kicks from Ampem Darkoa’s Comfort Yeboah and Hasaacas’ Success Ameya in the first half were enough to send both teams to an additional extra time.
The first half of the game saw Hasaacas Ladies miss out some crucial chances as they kept on pushing the ball to the half of Ampem Darkoa with Veronica Appiah and Doris Boaduwaa missing most of the chances created.
Ampem Darkoa took charge of the game using the wings as an easy route to break the defense of the Hasmal ladies but the likes of Janet Egyir, Linda Eshun and Blessing Shine were solid to prevent them from getting an opener.
Boaduwaa, who was solid on the field of play with her skillful passes keeping the defense of the opponents on their toes.
Appiah was fouled in the 18th minute by the Ampem Darkoa goalkeeper, Safiatu Salifu after she tried to convert a freekick shot from Boaduwaa. Success Ameya expertly converted to put Hasaacas Ladies in the lead.
Hasmal Ladies were dominating until in the 26th minute when Yeboah equalized via spot kick to end the first half 1-1.
From recess, it was yet another thrilling encounter with skillful displays from both sides chasing for a goal.
It was a game day for Ampem Darkoa Ladies as they managed to keep their opponents in their pockets to hold the game.
Hasaacas playmaker, Boaduwaa tried her best to put her side in the lead but her efforts were not enough to give Hasaacas the lead.
Coach Joe Nana Adakwah of Ampem Darkoa Ladies kept on pushing his girls to put up their best, as they mounted pressure on their opponents with long range shots.
Both sides kept on pushing the balls into each other’s half till the centre referee blew the final whistle to send the game to send the game to an additional 30 minutes of play.
Comfort Yeboah, Jennifer Owusua, Mavis Owusu, Victoria Osei, and Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah scored the penalties for Ampem Darkoa whilst Doreen Corpson, Rose Obianuju, Success Ameyaa excellently delivered with Veronica Baah missing for her team.
Ampem Darkoa managed to beat Hasaacas Ladies 5-3 on penalties to be crowned champions of the Women’s Premier League.
Ampem Darkoa’s goalkeeper, Safiatu Salifu was adjudged the best player of the match.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies ends the season as the only side to end the unbeaten run of Hasaacas Ladies.
The team would now represent Ghana in the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League.
This would be Ampem Darkoa’s third trophy of the of the WPL.
The 2021/22 WPL is partnered by Betway Ghana.
