Seven countries issue joint call on Taliban to ensure Afghan rights

Beijing, Mar. 31, (dpa/GNA) - Seven countries with geographic proximity to Afghanistan have called on the Taliban government to respect women’s rights and ensure children’s education.

The basic rights of all Afghans, including members of ethnic minorities, women and children, must be guaranteed, a joint statement issued at the end of a meeting in Tunxi in south-eastern China’s Anhui province said Thursday.

Participants in the third meeting of the littoral states included foreign ministers or other senior officials from China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

They also called on the Taliban, who returned to power in Afghanistan in August, to take “more visible measures” to distance itself from terrorist groups. They said Afghanistan must no longer be a “breeding ground” for terrorist organizations.

The Taliban’s acting Afghan Foreign Minister, Amir Chan Muttaki, also attended the conference.
