Ada West Assembly starts work on storm drains against perennial floods

Accra, March 22, GNA-The Ada West District Assembly has commenced construction works on storm drains ahead of the rainy season.

The drains are expected to receive and direct excess rainwater from adjoining communities to avoid flooding.

The District experience annual floods with rainwater from Sege, Agbedrafor, Bornikope, and Toflokpo.

Mr Sampson T. Kpankpah, the District Chief Executive, told journalists that work was ongoing on a six-kilometre road connecting key salt mining communities, including Nakomkope, Agbedrafor and Koluedor to address the situation.

He commended Electrochem Ghana Limited, a salt and chlorine-alkali manufacturing firm, for funding the projects and being responsive to the needs of the people and the Assembly.

The DCE said: “… the speed with which the Company responds to our requests is laudable. Barely three weeks ago, I put a request before the Company to assist the Assembly with heavy-duty machines and it received a favourable response. This will address one of our major challenges in the district. Demarcation and clearing of layouts and all these will help deal with our flooding problem. Work on this commenced over the weekend at Sege.”

He said after the 30-kilometre layout at Sege, all major towns would be attended to towards making the communities accessible to enhance the delivery of emergency services and floods free.

Nene Odeopeor Siada III, a Civil Engineer at Electrochem Ghana Limited in charge of Community Projects, said “…Electrochem will miss no opportunity to contribute to efforts geared towards the development of Ada communities and the improvement of the quality of life of the people.”

Every year, communities in the area get flooded leaving some residents stranded and properties destroyed.

The floods submerge roads linking communities, sometimes sweeping away livestock and other valuables with many locals either vacating their homes to seek refuge with neighbours or racing to higher grounds.
