Bolgatanga, March 8, GNA – The Rural Initiatives for Self-Employment – Ghana (RISE-Ghana), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in the Upper East Region has taken to the streets in Bolgatanga to campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The move, which saw women in branded T-shirts with placards positioned at vantage areas on streets in the Bolgatanga Township, was part of activities to mark the United Nations International Women’s Day.
The participants drew the attention of members of the public to the Day, which is celebrated annually on March 8, with messages such as “Yes she can, support her”, “I am a Woman, Respect my Existence or Expect Resistance,” and “Gender Equality for Sustainable Tomorrow,” among others on their placards.
The Day, celebrated on the theme: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” was in partnership with OXFAM Ghana and WILDAF through the ENOUGH! Project, with funding from the European Union.
Madam Jaw-haratu Amadu, the Head of Programmes, RISE-Ghana, who addressed the media, said the International Women’s Day celebration afforded women across the globe the opportunity to celebrate their achievements.
She said there was the need to break the bias, and inequality gap between men and women to ensure a sustained future for women.
“We are experts in every field we find ourselves as women, and so there is the need to support women in all our achievements,” she added.
Madam Amadu insisted that the biases some women faced in the educational, health, agriculture, and other sectors of the economy must be broken, and women given fair opportunities based on their skills and capability to deliver.
