Accra, March 10, GNA-Nana Amponsah Dokua III, Queen Mother, Osudoku Traditional Area, has urged policy makers to stop formulating new ones for women and girls and implement existing policies.
Nana Dokua said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the side-lines of a seminar to celebrate the International Women’s Day in Accra.
The seminar, organised by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) in partnership with the United Nations Ghana, European Union, Global Affairs Ghana, actionaid and Star-Ghana, was on the theme: ‘‘Climate Change, Empowering the Ghanaian Woman for a Sustainable Tomorrow.’’
The International Women’s Day, instituted by the United Nations was to globally celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women, past, present and future.
The Day, celebrated annually on 8th March, is also to rally support at all levels to ensure that the rights and empowerment of women in all areas of national development are prioritised.
Nana Dokua, who is also the President of the Queen Mothers’ Platform Ghana, said women and girls had asked enough for their voices to be heard.
“ I do not know what policies they are going to formulate again. There are a lot of policies and conventions to involve women but still they say no,” she noted.
The Queen Mother noted that women could make sound decisions when they were involved in making decisions in all spheres of life but were ignored.
“Decisions are taken in traditional areas without women, the question is why? Does it mean women cannot bring out good ideas,” she said.
Nana Dokua, also President of the Queen Mothers’ Platform Ghana, called for women and girls to be invited to the decision making table for the holistic development of the country.
