Zelensky party ready to delay NATO admission for security guarantees

Berlin, March 8, (dpa/GNA) – The party of Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has indicated its willingness to put its stated goal of joining NATO on the backburner in return for security guarantees from Russia.

“The alliance is not ready to admit Ukraine over the course of at least the next 15 years and has made this clear,” the Sluha Narodu (Servant of the People) party announced. Therefore, it said, it was time to discuss concrete security guarantees with Russia.

In addition, it said that Moscow had to be willing to confirm beyond doubt that it recognizes Ukrainian statehood “and guarantee that it will not threaten our state.”

Ukraine’s ruling party again rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia, however. “We are not even theoretically considering the possibility of … giving up parts of our territory. This is not acceptable. Our Ukraine – that includes Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea.”
