Washington: Europe should free itself from Russian energy dependency

Tallinn, March 8, (dpa/GNA) – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, has called on Europe to reduce its energy dependency on Russia, as Moscow continues to bombard Ukraine.

“I think it is significant not only as an opportunity but imperative at this moment to finally move off, for many countries in Europe, the dependence on Russian energy. Because Russia uses it as a weapon,” Blinken said during his visit to Estonia.

He said many other countries were taking similar action. “This only underscores the imperative of moving ahead as quickly as possible with renewable energy supply and sources,” Blinken said.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas expressed some reservations about an embargo on Russian energy following her meeting with Blinken. Asked about the issue, she said that different European countries depended on Russian gas and oil to varying degrees and that alternatives would have to be found.
