Accra, Mar. 3, GNA- The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) with the assistance of the Police, has arrested some peddlers of unregistered medicines known as Nkoyo and Nnompe Nnompe Tablets.
The products which are not registered by the FDA, are sold as herbal preparations and claim to treat pain and Inflammatory diseases.
A statement signed by Mrs Delese Darko, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Authority, and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) advised the public to desist from buying and using the products since it could not guarantee the health and safety of users.
It said laboratory analysis has shown that each container has a steriod tablet and an anti-Inflammatory tablet.
It said the unregistered drugs contained active Ingredients classified as prescription only medicines in unknown quantities.
“The products may also contain other unknown substances and its continuous use without proper prescriptions and guidance could lead to serious adverse health events such as headaches stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness depression, high blood pressure, Indigestion, restlessness, black or tarry stool and Insomnia among others,” it said.
It said the FDA seized large quantities of the products and safely disposed them.
The statement said the FDA is also asisiting the security agencies in investigations to ensure that all persons involved in the peddling of the unregistered medicines are apprehended and dealt with appropriately.
The statement warned the public to be cautious of the operations of drugs peddlers in the open market and other unapproved means and rather deal with only licenced pharmacies for all priscriptions.
It assured the public of continued surveillance to combat the operations of those dealing with unregistered medicines.
