Tema, March 2, GNA – Ms. Esther Tawiah, Executive Director, Gender Center for Empowering Development (GenCED), has called for the media to do more to promote gender equality to build a solid foundation for a prosperous and sustainable development.
She said there needed to be a joint action and shared ownership to drive the gender agenda, adding that, “women’s struggle for equality is a collective effort of all who care about human rights”.
She was speaking at a forum organized by the Tema Regional Office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to mark the start of activities to celebrate this year’s “Women’s Day”.
Ms. Tawiah said this year’s event should be marked by all irrespective gender and that the occasion should make a positive difference for women.
March 8, every year, has been designated International Women’s Day, a global holiday to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
Ms. Tawiah underlined the need for the media to join the campaign to help the society to overcome the stereotypes and the gender misconceptions to create a more inclusive world.
She noted that empowering women and promoting gender equality was the pathway to accelerated socio-economic progress.
Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and affording women equal rights to economic resources such as land and property were vital to realizing this goal.
Ms Tawiah said despite Ghanaian women’s immense contribution to the country’s economic and social development, they continued to struggle with cultural norms and systemic barriers, limiting their full participation in leadership and key decision processes, including decisions that affected them, primarily.
