Moscow, Feb 28, (dpa/GNA) – Russian troops have seized control of the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine, according to Moscow.
It is Europe’s largest nuclear power station.
Personnel are continuing to monitor and maintain the facility, Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
There was no initial confirmation from the Ukrainian side. The state-owned company Energoatom said that all nuclear power plants were continuing to operate as per normal.
Russian officials reported no increased radiation around the Zaporizhzhia plant.
Previously, Russian troops had taken control of the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl reactor north of Kiev. Radioactively contaminated soil was stirred up in the process, which led to slightly higher radiation readings at the site.
