Copenhagen, Dec 13, (dpa/GNA) – Two cargo ships have collided in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Sweden, according to Swedish media reports.
One of the vessels had overturned and was lying with its keel up, the TT news agency and the SVT radio station reported on Monday.
A major search and rescue operation was under way to save those who had fallen into the water, the reports said. At least two people were said to have gone overboard.
The top priority is saving lives, Swedish authority spokesperson Jonas Franzen told SVT.
The accident concerned a Danish vessel about 55 meters long and a British vessel more than 90 meters long, he said.
The collision was said to have occurred between Ystad in southern Sweden and the Danish island of Bornholm in the early hours of Monday morning.
The overturned Danish freighter is at risk of sinking, Franzen said.
The cause of the collision was not yet clear.
