2021 WASSCE: WAEC records improvement in Integrated Science, Social Studies

Accra, Dec.08, GNA –The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says there has been significant improvement in the performance of candidates who wrote Integrated Science and Social Studies in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

“There has been significant improvement in the performance of candidates at grades A1 to C6 in Integrated Science and Social Studies in 20121 as against 2020,” the Council said in a press release.

In the year 2020, WAEC recorded 52.53 per cent pass for candidates who sat for Integrated Science.

This year, it recorded 65.70 per cent pass for candidates who sat for Integrated Science.

In Social Studies, the Council recorded 64.31 per cent in the year 2020 whereas in the year 2021, 66.03 per cent was recorded for candidates who sat for the examination.

The press release, issued and signed by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, in Accra, said “on the other hand, English Language and Mathematics (core) recorded a decline in the performance of candidates at grades A1 to C6 in 2021 as compared to 2020.”

In English Language, the Council recorded 57.34 per cent in 2020 whereas in the year 2021, it declined to 54.08 per cent.

In Mathematics, WAEC recorded 65.71 per cent in the year 2020 but in 2021, 54.11 per cent was recorded.

The release gave the breakdown as follows:

English Language: A1 to C6 – 238,819(54.08 per cent), E8- 39,760 (9.00 per cent) D7- 50,255 (11.38 per cent) F9- 61,778 (13.99 per cent)

Mathematics (core): A1 to C6- 238,539(54.11 per cent), E8- 45,526(10.33 per cent), D7- 39,547(8.97per cent) F9- 88,631(20.11 per cent)

Integrated Science: A1 to C6- 289,329(65.70 per cent), E8- 41,686(9.47 per cent), D7- 66,178(15.03 per cent) F9- 20,599(4.68 per cent)

Social Studies: A1 to C6- 290,545(66.03 per cent) E8- 33,671(7.65 per cent) D7- 41,506(9.43 per cent) F9- 64,184(14.59 per cent)

It said a total of 446,352 candidates, made up of 221,439(49.6 per cent) males and 224,913(50.4 per cent) females from 965 schools entered for the examination.

“This figure is 18.8 per cent higher than the 2020 figure of 375,763.”

A total of 3,545, representing (0.79 per cent) of the candidates who registered, were absent from the examination, the release said.
