Takoradi, Nov. 16, GNA – Some residents in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis have called on government to make economic growth and stability a topmost priority to liberate the many Ghanaians in hardship.
They also called on the authorities to allow the state institutions and systems to work to advance the course of the nation.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency ahead of the 2022 Budget presentation to Parliament on Wednesday, they called for more focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), quality health care, and good roads linking the hinterlands to commercial cities, among other things.
Mr William Arthur, an entrepreneur, said the rich natural and human resources of the country must influence the development agenda, especially as government worked towards the “Ghana beyond Aid.”
“The budget should not only be about taxes and promises but also policy direction and commitment to duty to realise our aspirations as a nation…, the people of Ghana should enjoy a better standard of living now, especially with the additional blessings of oil,” he said.
“The budget must also look within, close a lot of systemic lopeholes… strengthen internal sources of income against imposition of too much taxes on the Ghanaian and the consumer”.
Dr Joseph Adapila, a retired economist, said the private sector should be empowered to create more jobs to halt youth unemployment, social insecurity and threats to nation building, associated with social insecurity.
Nana Amuzu, a trader, said the government must have a deliberate policy to halt the importation of certain commodities to drive the local manufacturing companies to thrive.
