Sunyani, Nov. 11, GNA- The Bono Regional Security Commands on Thursday led the celebration of fallen heroes with a wreath laying ceremony at the forecourt of the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG) hall in Sunyani to mark the 76th annual Veterans Day.
The Day falls on the 11th Hour, Day, and Month of every year to remember ex-service men who died in line of duty during the World War II (WWII) and other peace-keeping missions.
The colorful but solemn occasion brought together six contingents of 187 men and women from all the Security Commands, seven officers, heads of institutions, students, and the general public.
Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister laid a wreath on behalf of government to honor veterans still alive and others who were no more.
Lieutenant Colonel Kofi Obiri Yeboah, Commander of the Third Battalion of Infantry, Liberation Barracks in Sunyani laid one for the Ghana Armed Forces, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Joseph Gyamera, the Bono Regional Police Commander also laid another one the other Security Services.
Furthermore Ex-Warrant Officer I Daniel Kwarteng, the Bono Regional Chairman of VAG laid for the Veterans, and Nana Kwaku Bediako, a representative from the Bono Regional House of Chiefs laid on behalf of the chiefs and people in the region.
Speaking to the media later, Lieutenant Mary Kwuwukumey, the Public Relations Officer for the Third Garrison encouraged security personnel and the general to buy ‘Poppies’ to raise funds in support of the retired soldiers who were in dire need of financial assistance as a show of appreciation for their demonstration of selfless efforts during the WWII and other peace keeping missions.
She said picking arms was not the way to resolve disputes and conflicts for peace to prevail in a country, saying since “we’re living in peace now, every Ghanaian must contribute to maintain it for national unity to promote political stability for socio-economic advancement”.
