American woman found guilty of killing mother freed from Bali prison

Jakarta, Oct. 29, (dpa/GNA) – An American woman found guilty of murdering her mother at a hotel on the Indonesian resort island of Bali was released from prison on Friday, an official said.

Heather Mack, now 26, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2014 for her role in the killing, but received a series of cuts to her sentence for good behaviour, said Lili, the head of the female section at Bali’s Kerobokan prison.

Her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, was also found guilty of murdering Mack’s mother and is still serving an 18-year sentence in the same jail.

Mack will be deported but has expressed an intention to return, Lili said.

“She was our model prisoner. She was active at the church and taught other inmates dance lessons,” said Lili.

Mack was pregnant at the time of her arrest and gave birth to a baby girl while in detention.

The body of Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, was found in a suitcase inside the trunk of a taxi outside a Bali hotel in 2014. The young couple were arrested at another hotel a day later.
