Kpone, Sept. 15, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly’s (KKMA) Culture Department has held its second Heritage Day celebration with a food bazaar aimed at promoting the consumption of Ghanaian food.
The heritage day which formed part of the Homowo celebrations were on the theme: “healthy living promotes long life”.
Members of the Kpone Market Women Association, Ghana National Association of Garment Makers, Hairdressers Association and National Fishmongers and Traders Association participated in the bazaar.
Ms. Sandra Boison, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Cultural Director said the annual heritage day celebration was to promote the food culture, of Ghana, celebrate the heritage of the Ga people, and bring together natives of the municipality to interact with each.
Ms. Boison added that it also aimed at promoting domestic tourism with the different Ghanaian dishes such as Banku and Okro Stew, Kenkey with fried fish and pepper, rice and stew, yam and palaver sauce, rice balls with groundnut soup, and Apeprensa which was displayed at the bazaar.
She advised the public to shun junk foods, and rather consume the nutritious Ghanaian dishes, as well as more fruits and vegetables and encouraged people to regularly exercise which was also, the key to helping them burn some calories to stay healthy.
She said the Kpone Heritage Day celebration also help create an opportunity for the residents to be educated on socio-cultural issues that affect the community members such as domestic violence, among others.
Mrs. Florence Lamptey-Okosso, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Director of the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), educated the women on domestic violence and spousal murders.
She said domestic violence manifests in different forms which include slapping, throwing things at someone, pushing, hitting, beating, acid attack, attacking someone with a weapon, strangling and inflicting pain on someone’s body, as well as insulting and eventually killing the person.
Mrs. Lamptey-Okosso stated that another type of domestic violence involves threatening and tormenting victims making them live in fear continuously.
She urged the public to be on the lookout for these red flags in their relationships and homes, and immediately report such cases to CHRAJ or the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to prevent spousal murders.
“Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence either young or old, male or female, but women and children are more vulnerable.
“We have realised that most of the time, the victims ignore the red flags until it is too late,” she stated.
Mr. Seth Sotie, Kpone-Katamanso the Director of the National Commission on Civic Education, educated the participants on marriage registration, while Mr. Zac Abrahams, Non-Formal Education Director, and officials of Community Development also sensitized the people on their institution’s core mandates.
