Kpone (Near Tema) Sept. 3, GNA – Mass Vaccination against rabies infection has commenced in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, Municipal Veterinary officer has stated.
The exercise against the rabies disease started from September 2nd and expected to end on October 5th, 2021. About 4,000 animals including Monkeys, Cats and Dogs have been targeted for the vaccination and owners would pay GHC5.00 per head.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kpone, Dr. Emmanuel Kwao Pecku, Municipal Veterinary Officer noted that, the mass vaccination had become necessary to contain the situation in the municipality.
He explained that, the Municipality have recorded about 115 cases of dog bites from January to July across the various health facilities saying the situation did not look good revealing that, there were unreported cases.
Dr. Pecku noted that, five positive rabies cases were confirmed within the municipality whilst 25 others exposed to the disease were monitored.
He said one person succumbed to the disease at Oyibi in the Hebron Electoral area of the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.
The Veterinary Officer revealed that, human exposure to the rabies virus was prevalent in communities such as Kpone, Kakasonanka, Kobekro One and Two; and Katamanso all within the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.
The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly, National Commission for Civic Education, and the Ghana News Agency have rallied their support to the veterinary directorate to disseminate the information to the public for the vaccination exercise.
