Police search for hit-and-run suspect driver on Suhum-Amanase highway

Suhum (E/R), May 28, GNA – The Ghana Police Service have sent out messages to its various checkpoints for the arrest of a hit and run suspect driver who knocked and killed a pedestrian on the Suhum- Amanase highway.

The Suhum Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) had received information on May 27 at about 2000 hours, that there had been a hit and run fatal accident at Amanase near Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The District Patrol Team and personnel of the Suhum District MTTD then proceeded to the scene and found a male mutilated body scattered on the road with the entire highway blocked.

According to a police report, the agitated youth of Amanase who had massed at the accident scene blocked the highway with cement blocks and burned tyres in the middle of the road barring vehicular movements.

The youth turned to attack the police with stones, while trying to clear the road, however, with the assistance of additional men from Coaltar District Police Command as well as the National Highway Patrol Team, rounds of ammunition were discharged into the air to scare and clear the angry youth for free flow of traffic.

Police Sergeant Francis Gomado, Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Regional Police Command, told Ghana News Agency that the mutilated body was gathered and conveyed to Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for identification, preservation and autopsy.

Adding that, messages have been sent to various police checkpoints to arrest the hit and run suspect driver to assist in the police investigation.

He said police were still on the accident scene ensuring security and free flow of traffic.
