Jordan’s monarch, ex-crown prince make joint appearance after split

Amman, April 11, (dpa/GNA) – Jordanian King Abdullah II and his half-brother Prince Hamzah, an ex-heir apparent, on Sunday made their first joint appearance since a rare royal split erupted in public earlier this month, Jordanian media reported.

Last week, the Jordanian government said Hamzah and others were involved in efforts to destabilize the kingdom.

Authorities said several high-profile individuals had been arrested due to “security reasons” amid media reports they are linked to Hamzah.

On Sunday, the Jordanian monarch and other royals including Prince Hamzah visited royal tombs on the occasion of the centenary of Jordan’s foundation, the media said, carrying a picture showing the king, Hamzah and other members of the royal family.

The dispute became public on April 3 when Hamzah said the army told him not to leave his house or communicate with anyone.

Earlier this week, the king said he preferred to deal with the issue within the family. The palace said Hamzah vowed loyalty and support to the king after mediation by their uncle, Prince Hassan.

Hamzah, 41, was the crown prince between 1999 and 2004, when Abdullah II removed him and appointed his own son, al-Hussein.
