Pigbengben community in dire need of health centre

Pigbengben, (UW/R), Oct. 21, GNA – The Pigbengben community in the Wa West District is in dire need of a health facility to help avoid preventable deaths in the community.

That would also contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring good health and well-being for all by 2030.

The community members through their own initiative, commenced the construction of a health facility about a year ago to enable members of the community, especially pregnant women and children, to access timely and quality health care.

However, the construction of the facility could not succeed due to their inability to secure support from benevolent individuals and organisations to complete it.

Mr Abraham Tam, the Youth Secretary for the community told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at the community that they built the structure, contributed money to secure about 50 pieces of roofing boards but could not get the roofing sheets and cement to finish it.

According to him, the structure was at the verge of collapsing and the roofing boards getting rotten due to the rain.

He added that the District Chief Executive of the area had promised to provide them with cement and roofing sheets to help finish the project, which they were still waiting for his support.

Madam Faiza Dapilah, a community health volunteer at Pigbengben said they had to travel several kilometers to access antenatal, skilled delivery and other health care services at Vieri.

She explained that the situation had posed a serious health risk to the community in times of emergency.

Madam Dapilah noted that the deplorable state of the road connecting Pigbengben to Vieri compounded their challenges in accessing timely and quality health care services.

She said pregnant women sometimes deliver on the way to the health centre or lost their lives and unborn children in the process of delivery as a result of the lack of a health facility in the community.

Mr Joseph Dari Yaweh, the Assembly Member for the Vieri Electoral Area said lack of funds had been the setback of the assembly to build a health facility at Pigbengben.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 required member states that were signatories to the Goals to ensure health and well-being for all its citizens by 2030.
It also required them to ensure access to quality primary health care at all levels by 2030.
