Accra, Oct. 12, GNA – A impressive performance from Coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor’s charges ensured they walloped Qatar 5-1 in an international friendly encounter played at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey on Monday.
Matching onto the pitch, the Black Stars of Ghana were humiliated in a 3-0 defeat against Mali and picked up the positives to convincingly beat the Asian champions, Qatar.
The win becomes Coach Akonnor’s first win in two matches after taking charge as Head Coach in January this year.
It was Ghana who grabbed the first goal through debutant Tariq Fosu before Almoez Ali cancelled the lead on the stroke of halftime.
Qatar’s Almoez came close to scoring but his shot was saved by the woodwork in the third minute.
The Black Stars dominated the game and nearly fetched the opener when Thomas Partey sent Andre Ayew through on goal however his weak effort was saved by the opponent’s goalkeeper, Sheeb in the 13th minute.
Almoez capitalized on a defensive blunder to draw level with the Ghanaians.
The striker outpaced Joseph Aidoo to a long searching ball and lobbed the ball over Razak Abalora into the yawning net.
Ghana came into the second half searching for goals and it yielded results after Captain Dede Ayew’s brace, and a goal each from Samuel Owusu and Caleb Ekuban ensured Ghana win convincingly.
The friendly match is part of preparations as Ghana battle Sudan for a slot at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.
