Ahafo Region records first confirmed COVID-19 case

Sunyani, June 11, GNA – The Ahafo Region has recorded its first confirmed case for the deadly Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after a pregnant woman tested positive after delivery.

That woman who was in a critical condition after delivery at the St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Hospital at Hwediem in the Asutifi South District, was consequently, referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi for further treatment, where she tested positive for the virus.

Mrs Stella Sefa, the acting Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer for the Ahafo Region and Nurse Manager at the Goaso Municipal Government Hospital confirmed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani.

That infected person, Mrs Sefa added was isolated at a centre at the Municipal Hospital, while Goaso responding to treatment.

She said the patient “is asymptomatic” and assured contact tracing had begun while the necessary measures had been put in place to curtail the spread of the virus.

Mrs Sefa entreated the public to continue to strictly adhere to the health protocols and precautionary measures – observation of cough etiquette, hand washing with soap under running water and use of hand sanitizers to prevent contracting and spreading of the virus.

She urged one must stay at home if one did not have serious business to do outside, stressing once at a public place, one must constantly remember to wear face/nose mask and maintain social and physical distancing.

“The virus does not move, but it is humans that move with the virus to infect others”, Mrs Sefa added.
