Marie Stopes International commence operations in Tamale

Tamale, May 25, GNA -The Northern Regional maternal death which increased from 33 in 2010 to 47 in 2011 has been described as a worrying situation.rn     rnMr Peter Dakurah, the Northern Regional Zonal Manager of Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), said the current initiative to reposition family planning as a critical component of the country\’s social-economic development was an important aspect of Sexual Reproductive Health since it had been established that it could reduce maternal mortality.rn     rnHe expressed the concern in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the launch of Marie Stopes International (MSI), a United Kingdom-based international non-governmental organisation working in sexual reproductive health worldwide in Tamale.rn     rnMr Dakurah said reproductive education was a basic part of life cycle which everyone needed to be abreast with and to facilitate human growth as well as informed choices in life.rn     rnHe therefore welcomed MSI to Ghana and commended the organisation for extending its quality services to the country.rn rnWith over 30 years\’ experience MSI, a social business service, is committed to providing quality information and service to help people protect themselves from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) as well as empower them to have children by choice and not by chance.rn     rnMr Antonio Quarshie-Awusah, Marketing Manager of MI, said MSI was committed to reducing maternal and infant mortality in the country as well as to compliment the efforts of partners such as the Ghana Health Service.rn     rnHe said MSI would provide services in sexual reproductive health consultation, guidance and counselling, comprehensive family planning service, male and female clinics, antenatal and post-natal care, laboratory services and pregnancy crisis counselling and management at subsidised rates.rn     rnMr Quarshie-Awusah, said with a team of highly trained and dedicated staff, the public could be assured of quality services. These services would be replicated in deprived areas through outreach programmes.rn     rnHe said as part of the company’s medium to long term plans, there would a community outreach program to visit the various districts in the region to attend to their needs.rn rnGNA
