Tamale, April 2, GNA – The central business district of the Tamale Metropolis was on Thursday, closed to business activities as second round of the mass disinfection exercise took place within and outside the metropolis as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that shop operators, hawkers, petty traders, supermarkets, financial institutions, mobile money agents and prospective buyers as well as other forms of business activities were absent in the entire metropolis.
The streets were virtually deserted as the usual daily vehicular movement and human traffic were missing, resulting from the halt in commercial activities.
Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister, said the exercise would aid to kill bacteria and other pathogens, which could influence the spread of COVID-19 in the metropolis.
“The 109 markets, tourists’ sites, some known institutions and other public places where we think people converge a lot were identified and being disinfected in the region to prevent residents from contracting the disease and also contain its spread”, he noted.
He encouraged residents to rigorously adhere to the preventive guidelines issued by medical experts, adding that it would help to minimise or stop the spread and infection of the virus.
Some members of the public who spoke to the GNA commended residents and shop operators as well as other business owners for their cooperation that had allowed a successful disinfection exercise.
