Accra, April 2, GNA – ECOM Ghana, a global commodity merchant in cocoa, coffee, and cotton, has donated 1.2 million units of medicated soaps to COCOBOD to be distributed to cocoa farmers as part of its contribution to the fight against the COVID-19.
The items, worth 2.4 million Ghana cedis, would be distributed to registered cocoa farmers across the country to help them practice effective hand washing.
Mr Muhammadu Muzzammil, the Country Manager of ECOM Ghana, who presented the items to COCOBOD in Accra, said the gestures said the company’s operations hinged on the activities of cocoa farmers and it was imperative to ensure their safety to continue to produce more for sustainable development.
“We donate these items because of the long relationship with our cocoa farmers. We are at a time of humanitarian crisis and our company cannot sit unconcerned but to come to their aid,” he said.
He was optimistic that the gesture would enable the cocoa farmers and their households to observe the principle of regular hand washing to stay safe in the wake of the disease.
Mr Muzzammil Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, COCOBOD Chief Executive Officer, who received the items, commended the company for the kind gesture in response to the health needs of the farmers.
He stated that the spread of the disease was a global issue, which needed collective efforts at all angles to curb.
Mr Aidoo urged the cocoa farmers to adhere to the precautionary measures by the Ghana Health Service to protect themselves from the disease.
He called on Ghanaians to break the chain by staying at home to prevent the spread.
Meanwhile the COCOBOD has also donated 5,000 litres of sanitizers, 5,000 cartons of unsweetened natural cocoa drink, 10,000 bottles of liquid soap and a cheque for GHc200,000 to the Ministry of Health to support government efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
