Sege residents struggle to access potable water

Sege, Apr 16, GNA – Residents of Sege, in the Ada West District, Greater Accra Region, are facing severe challenges due to erratic water supply, leaving many residents struggling to access clean and safe water for daily chores.

Some residents have therefore resorted to fetching water from stagnant water sources, sharing it with animals.

The situation, which has persisted for several weeks, has forced residents in areas such as Sege township, Bornikope, Koluedor, and Toflokpo to resort to alternative sources, including boreholes, sachet water, and, in some cases, untreated water from open wells and streams.

They noted that prior to the crisis, they received for free the byproduct from a sachet water factory, which they used for bathing and washing of their clothes, but due to the current situation, the workers of the factory were selling the water byproduct to them.

Mr. Ernest Kugblenu, Assembly Member for the Sege-Koni Electoral Area, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said measures were being put in place to alleviate the plight of the residents.

Mr. Kugblenu revealed that he has collaborated with the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sege Constituency, Mr. Daniel Kisseh Bassey, to arrange for water tankers to distribute water to affected communities at a subsidised price.

He cautioned residents, saying, “I would like to inform everyone that the water being distributed is not treated, and therefore, it must be boiled before use.”

Mr. Ezekiel Awinyan, the water system manager at the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, attributed the water supply issues to a damaged transformer and other technical challenges at the water station serving the area.

Several residents expressed frustration over the unreliable water supply, urging the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and other relevant authorities to swiftly address the situation.

“We can go for days without a single drop of water from our taps. This is affecting our hygiene and daily activities,” said Madam Florence Alimo, a resident of Sege.

Meanwhile, residents are appealing to the MP and the Ada West District Assembly to intervene and ensure stable and affordable access to water, especially during the dry season.
