MP questions OSP’s effectiveness, calls for accountability

Accra, April 1, GNA- Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, has expressed concerns over the alleged ineffectiveness of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in fighting corruption in Ghana.

Speaking during an interview with a section of the media, Nana Baffour Awuah, cited the OSP’s handling of only three corruption cases in eight years as evidence of its alleged ineffectiveness.

“The OSP has been in existence for eight years, but it has only handled three corruption cases. This is unacceptable, and we need to hold them accountable,” he stated.

The OSP was established in 2018 to investigate and prosecute corruption cases, recover proceeds of corruption, and prevent corruption.

Its mandate includes investigating corruption cases involving public officers, politicians, and private sector actors.

While acknowledging that the OSP had made some progress, Nana Baffour Awuah emphasised the need for the OSP to account for its stewardship before approving its budget.

“We need to review the OSP’s office to ensure it is meeting its mandate. We cannot continue to approve their budget without seeing tangible results,” he told the media in Parliament House.

The Minority in Parliament has thrown its weight behind Nana Baffour Awuah’s call for accountability, emphasising  the need for a review of the OSP’s office to ensure it is effective in fighting corruption.
