Minority in Parliament urges Speaker to protect lawmakers’ rights

Accra, April 10, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has called on Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, to take immediate action to safeguard the rights of lawmakers.

This comes after a recent incident where National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials attempted to arrest Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, which was allegedly linked to investigations into drug trafficking and money laundering, involving two international flights that transited through Ghana in March 2025.

In a memo to Speaker Bagbin, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip, expressed concern that NIB officials disregarded established protocols governing interactions between lawmakers and security agencies.

“The NIB officials acted without regard for the procedures that govern engagements with Members of Parliament,” it stated.

As a result, the Minority had urged Speaker Bagbin to ensure that all interactions between lawmakers and security agencies adhered to constitutional provisions and parliamentary protocols.

“This incident highlights the need for clear guidelines to protect lawmakers’ rights and maintain the integrity of parliamentary processes,” the memo noted.

The attempted arrest of Rev. Fordjour has sparked debate about the limits of executive power and the protection of lawmakers’ rights.

The incident has also raised questions about the role of security agencies in investigating allegations involving lawmakers.

Meanwhile, Speaker Bagbin is expected to respond to the Minority’s concerns and take steps to address the issue.
