Make Women’s Bank sustainable – ICU-Ghana to government

Accra, April 7, GNA – The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, has urged the government to be purposeful and consistent about the Women’s Bank project and make it sustainable to bring economic relief to Ghanaian women.

He appealed to the government not to abandon the initiative midway for lack of funds, as was the case in the past with the Women’s World Bank.

Mr Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary, ICU-Ghana, said this in a statement to the Ghana News Agency at the Upper West Regional conference of the Union in Wa.

The conference, held across the region, is part of a preparation towards ICU-Ghana’s 12th Quadrennial Delegate Conference in August 2025.

He urged board chairmen of the rural and community banks to desist from interfering in the day-to-day administration of the banks.

Such acts, he stressed, negatively impacted the efficiency, effectiveness and corporate image of the rural and community banks.

He reiterated the need for equal partnership on the side of the union and management for effective collaboration since capital and labour stand on an equal pedestal to merge and produce to bring about the profitability of the business.

Mr Ayawine emphasised that capital, standing on its own, could not produce and make profit; neither could labour standing alone produce and earn income.

“It is therefore logical that these two indispensable components of business merge on equal footing to enable a successful business to be conducted.”

He urged all delegates to critically study the ICU Constitution and proposed motions for amendments to areas to improve the quality of the constitution.

Mr Ayawine called for stakeholders’ collaboration to urgently address labour-related concerns to forestall unnecessary industrial actions at the workplace.

The General Secretary said, “Productivity suffers when there is no peace and harmony within the arena of labour relations.”

He urged the delegates to actively participate in all the deliberations and decisions of the conference to meet the objective of the conference as the preferred trade union organisation in Ghana and the best in Africa.
