Accra, April 8, GNA – About 300 military personnel and representatives from approximately 40 nations are participating in the 2025 African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) in Accra.
The ALFS is being co-hosted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the United States Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF).
The summit, taking place from April 7 to 10, has brought together land force commanders from across Africa, along with partner nations, academics, and government leaders.
This year’s theme, “Optimizing Land Forces for the Emerging Security Environment,” highlights the importance of strengthening military collaboration in the face of growing regional threats.
The ALFS, an annual event, has previously been held in countries including the United States (2010 & 2022), Uganda (2012), Senegal (2015), Tanzania (2016), Malawi (2017), Nigeria (2018), Botswana (2019), Ethiopia (2020), Côte d’Ivoire (2023), and Zambia (2024).
The 2025 summit offers a platform for senior military leaders to foster relationships, exchange ideas on shared security concerns, and encourage regional cooperation.
“It is critically important that we adapt and strengthen our armed forces to confront the evolving threats that seek to undermine and destabilize our countries and regions. Ghana remains an exporter of security, and a key democratic model as violent extremism threatens this region’s stability and prosperity,” U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, said.
She added, “The United States is proud to co-host the African Land Forces Summit with Ghana and of our partnerships across the African continent in support of this endeavor.”

Major General Andrew C. Gainey, Commanding General of SETAF-AF, described the summit as vital in building innovative approaches to common security challenges.
“The African Land Forces Summit is essential to building innovative solutions to address shared security challenges,” he said.
“I want to extend my thanks to our co-hosts, the Ghana Armed Forces, for their exceptional partnership. They have set the stage for a successful summit, and I look forward to a productive and impactful week with all our guests.”
The summit is expected to deepen military collaboration among African nations and contribute significantly to peace and stability across the continent.
Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Defence Minister, said the Summit was a welcome development in defence cooperation between Ghana and the United States as globally, security challenges had increased the demand for multinational solutions.
