Abesim, (Bono), April 1, GNA – Forsports Foundation, a non-governmental organisation and its partners KVMO e.V, a German NGO, have planted more than 200 tree species at Abesim in the Sunyani Municipality.
“We are not just planting trees; we are planting hope, responsibility, and a vision for a greener future”, Dr Eugene Eugene Litvinov, the Chairman of K V M O e.V told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the tree planting exercise.
Traditional and opinion leaders and school children participated in the exercise which according to the NGOs were their contributions to tackle deforestation, conserve the environment and mitigate the impact of climate change in the area.
The day’s event, dubbed the “Regional Day of Action”, also featured a women’s football tournament at the Abesim Town Park, where young female athletes showcased their talent in a high-energy competition.
Dr Litvinov highlighted the long term vision of supporting the Abesim and its adjoining communities, including Nkrankrom, to address the rapid deforestation in the area for environmental sustainability.
“This is a ground breaking initiative that merges environmental conservation with gender empowerment”, Christopher Forsythe, Founder of Forsports Foundation also told the GNA, saying the “tournament is a bold statement for gender equality, challenging traditional perceptions and proving that women’s football deserves recognition and investment”.
He highlighted the significance of the event, saying “football is not just a game, but a tool for empowerment.
Today, these young women have shown that given the right platform, they can excel, inspire, and reshape the future of women’s sports in Ghana”, he stated.
Mr Forsythe stressed that “the Regional Day of Action leaves a lasting legacy, proving that real change happens when communities unite for a shared purpose, whether it’s protecting the environment or empowering the next generation of leaders, athletes, and change-makers”.
Nana Oppong Ofosuhene, the Akwamuhene (sub-chief) of Abesim, on behalf of Nana Kumi Acheaw II, the Chief of Abesim, welcomed the initiative and praised the NGOs for their foresight in helping to preserve the environment and mitigate climate change impact in the area.
He said helping to unearth the sporting talents of women and girls was also in the right direction, saying “by planting trees and promoting women’s football, we are nurturing a future where both our environment and our young people can thrive together”.
