By Charles Tawiah

Atwima-Hwidiem (Ash), April 1, GNA – Fire on Saturday gutted a five-bedroom house at Atwima-Hweidem, near Nkawie, destroying properties and rendering tenants homeless.

The cause of the fire is not yet known as at the time of filing this report but some of the tenants suspected it to be a gas explosion.

Some of the properties destroyed were double decker beds, mattresses, furniture, wardrobes, room dividers, decoders, television sets, video decks, wax prints, sums of money, among others.

Mr. Solomon Agyei, a victim told the Ghana News Agency at Nkawie, that, all the tenants including a student girl, who was cooking with the gas cylinder, were outside at the time of the fire outbreak.

He said a passer-by spotted smoke from the house and raised the alarm, which attracted people nearby, but everything got burnt by the time they were able to put the fire under control.

The investigation by the tenants led to the suspicion of the gas cylinder as the cause of the fire.

Mr. Agyei said none of the tenants was able to pick anything except what they were wearing at the time of the incident, adding that some of them were currently lodging with friends and relatives.

He, therefore, appealed to the government, the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Philanthropists and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) to come to their aid and rescue them from their current unbearable situation.
