Cairo, Apr. 14, (dpa/GNA) – The death toll from the US military strikes on Yemen’s Houthi-controlled Ras Isa fuel port has risen to 74, the Iranian-aligned militia said on Friday.
The Houthi-affiliated al-Masirah TV, citing the militia-run Ministry of Health, reported that at least 74 were killed and 171 others injured in the bombardment of the facility in western Yemen.
The information could not be independently verified.
The late Thursday operation aimed to eliminate a key source of revenue for the Houthis, which helps “sustain their military operations,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X.
“The objective of these strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis, who continue to exploit and bring great pain upon their fellow countrymen,” CENTCOM added.
CENTCOM did not provide casualty figures.
The broadcaster earlier quoted local health authorities in the coastal city of al-Hodeidah, where the Ras Isa port is located, as saying that many of the wounded suffered burns and other severe injuries.
It added that medical teams were working under extreme strain to treat the influx of victims.
Rebel sources said the US strikes marked one of the deadliest in the region in recent weeks.
Last month, US President Donald Trump ordered massive attacks on the rebels in Yemen, justifying the move with the need to protect US shipping in the region. Houthi-ruled areas in Yemen have since experienced a series of US strikes.
Since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked Israel and international merchant ships in support of its ally, the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement.
