Accra, April 02, GNA – Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways has ordered two contractors, First Sky and Ozwald to immediately resume construction works on the Tema Motorway Roundabout – Dawhenya and Ashaiman Roundabout – Afienya Roads.
The Minister gave the directive during an inspection tour of the roads.
Speaking to the press during the inspection tour, Mr Agbodza noted that there were spots that they thought could have been remedied, but up to now they haven’t.
He said DHM, they were not even available; saying “that is a fact”.
“They came to remedy a section, that is TT Brothers Traffic Light and others. But all these sections, which are still part of their contract, didn’t do much. That is why MMU came in”.
“I think their concern is that they want to know whether the government is committed to this.”
The Minister said the President during his State of the Nation Address to Parliament reiterated the Government’s commitment towards the completion of the project.
He mentioned that the finance minister in his 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government to Parliament, also indicated the Government’s commitment to get the project done
“So, I don’t know what assurance they still need. They know the process as enshrined in the debt restructuring requires certain steps to be taken at certain times,” Mr Agbodza said.
“So, I feel disappointed that they have not delivered as required. But let them also be aware that the maintenance of the site, if they fail, is a breach (of contract) and I could cite them for a breach of the contract as well.”
The Minister said: “Immediately, I am asking First Sky Group to help MMU to remedy all that we can do to ease the problem on the Motorway Roundabout towards Central University.
“And immediately, I am asking Oswald to also work on the Ashaiman Roundabout-Afienya beyond Michel Camp.”
He urged them to do everything they could do as a remedial activity to improve the surface of the roads, while doing the main construction.
“I ask them to do that immediately. It is emergency work, so we are not going to wait for anything. They should move in as quickly as possible. As early as this evening or tomorrow, they can mobilize under the guidance of the Chief Executive of Highways. And let’s see what we can do to limit the suffering of our people immediately,” Mr Agbodza stated.
Mr Humphrey Williams, Chairman of Oswal Investment Limited said: “My commitment is without question. We have done a lot of work in this country. Even when we don’t get payment, we still continue our work.”
“So, the commitment is there. We will ensure that within a couple of months, they will see a difference on that stretch of the road. People are really suffering. It was obvious during our journey. I want to assure them that help is coming.”
