Copenhagen, Apr. 2, (dpa/GNA) – Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen arrived in Greenland on Wednesday, five days after US Vice President JD Vance’s visit.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants the large Arctic Island to become part of the world’s biggest economy. At present, Greenland is autonomous within the Kingdom of Denmark.
“The US will not take over Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” Frederiksen told reporters.
Frederiksen and her husband were welcomed by Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Múte B. Egede and his wife.
She emphasised that, despite their individual relationships, it was clear Denmark and Greenland must stand together in the face of US pressure.
Frederiksen faces the challenge of balancing relations with the US as an important trading partner, while also affirming Greenland’s right to self-determination and maintaining cohesion within the Kingdom of Denmark.
While Vance’s visit last Friday was limited to a few hours at a remote US military base in northern Greenland, Frederiksen plans to stay until Friday and hold talks with leading politicians.
There was criticism in Greenland of Frederiksen’s trip coming too soon after Greenland’s recent election, with a new coalition government not yet having taken office.
