Ashanti Regional Police Command demand release of officers involved in Nyinahin shootings

Kumasi April 25, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police is collaborating with the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, for the release of military officers involve in the killing of a civilian at Nyinahin, in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti. 

The soldiers are said to have killed the civilian, identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi and injured three others, during a confrontation with some mourners, who were on their way to bury their friend at the Nyinahin cemetery. 

A statement signed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, had since visited both the crime scene and the injured victims at the hospital. 

The Regional Commander had also assured the community that a thorough investigation was underway and that those responsible would be brought to justice.  

The statement said preliminary reports indicated that on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at approximately 11:00 hours, some mourners from Nyinahin were en route to the cemetery along the Kumasi-Bibiani Highway to bury a friend. 

It said while on the procession, a military truck transporting armed personnel suddenly halted, upon spotting one of the mourners wearing a military uniform. 

The statement said eyewitness recounted that the military personnel approached the mourner and attempted to forcibly disrobe him of the uniform.  

A confrontation ensued, during which one of the soldiers allegedly discharged his weapon, striking the mourner in the head, resulting in his instant death. 

The report indicated that, as the situation escalated, and in a bid to avert retaliation, the military personnel reportedly fired indiscriminately and, in the process, injured three more of the mourners. 

 A police investigative team was dispatched to the scene, where they retrieved spent shell casings as part of ongoing forensic investigations. 

It said the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary, awaiting autopsy. 

The statement called on the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with the investigation to ensure that justice was served.
