Dambai (O/R), March 25, GNA – A severe waste accumulation crisis has engulfed the Dordoe Korpe lorry station in the Krachi Nchumuru district of the Oti Region, sparking widespread concerns about environmental health and community well-being.
The riverbank, which serves as a waiting area for commuters, is overwhelmed with plastic waste, discarded food items, and other debris, posing a significant threat to both the ecosystem and public health.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the area and observed that the busy lorry station has become a hotspot for littering, with passengers frequently leaving behind food wrappers and other refuse while waiting for transport.
Commuters, traders, and drivers at the station have expressed frustration over the deteriorating sanitation conditions, citing inaction from local authorities in the district.
The stakeholders at the station are calling for immediate action, urging the district assembly to take responsibility by implementing effective waste disposal measures.
Mr Simon Kodzo Nyanyovor, a driver, and some food vendors are advocating for more waste bins and regular cleaning services, which they believe would significantly improve the area’s cleanliness.
To address the growing crisis, the stakeholders called for a collaborative approach to waste management and environmental protection, urging local authorities to prioritize these initiatives.
The goal is to improve sanitation and restore the River Oti to its former state for the entire community’s benefit.
