Sunyani, (Bono), March 25, GNA – The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani has opened the first Satellite Communication (SATCOM) training centre in West Africa, with the induction of 25 trainees from various academic disciplines.
The SATCOM is under the University’s Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC) and designed to provide national and international certifications and offers short and professional courses to industry professionals and individuals.
Addressing the inaugural Cohort Training in Sunyani, Professor John Kuwornu, the Dean of the School of Agriculture and Technology, stressed the institution’s commitment to equipping graduates with practical and industry-relevant skills.
The center would also train participants with a hybrid model, incorporating both in-person and online sessions to accommodate diverse learning preferences. Prof. Kuwornu explained that the center represented a significant advancement in developing workforce skills in satellite communication and thereby positioning the nation as a leader in SATCOM training within the sub-region.
The training center would not only equip trainees for employment opportunities, but also enable them to become entrepreneurs, foster job creation and reduce unemployment.
Dr Prince Antwi-Agyei, the Head of EORIC, said the curriculum was developed in partnership with industry players to align with market demands, saying the participants would be trained by a certified satellite installer and obtain global certification from Oasis Network.
He expressed appreciation to the Ghana Skills Development Fund which invested GH¢2 million funds into the center, and appreciated the contributions of other stakeholders.
Mr Evans Akpene Yaw Adom, the Project Lead, said the objective of the center was to provide excellence in satellite communication training, research, and innovation, saying the center aimed at fostering technological advancement and sustainable development.
