Tema, March 18, GNA – The Social Workers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has appealed to the government to expedite the passage of the Social Work Bill to enhance the social work in the country.

SWAG made the appeal in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency as part of the celebration of the Social Work Month, which is being commemorated globally on the theme “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing.”

It noted that the bill was currently awaiting deliberation in Parliament, adding that it was crucial in professionalising social work, regulating the sector, and ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.

It also called for the establishment of a Social Protection Fund to provide financial support for vulnerable groups that currently lack protective funding for their needs.

Touching on the theme, the association indicated that it underscores the critical role social workers play in fostering connections across generations, promoting social justice, and advocating for the most vulnerable members of society.

SWAG stated that throughout the month, it would commemorate the Social Work Month with activities, including media engagement and student outreach programmes, aimed at raising awareness about the profession and its impact on Ghanaian society.

It added that they would also engage with the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to discuss the strengthening of the social work profession in Ghana and address key policy issues.
