Sunyani, (Bono), March 20, GNA – Stakeholders have expressed concern about the poor environmental sanitation in the Sunyani Metropolis.
They situation needs an urgent attention to stem the outbreak of communicable diseases and asked the Sunyani city authorities to take the needed action.
The stakeholders, comprising traditional and local authorities, Heads of Agencies and Departments as well as civil society organisations and actors raised the concern at the launch of an Adolescent clinic and Digital hub set up by the Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), a non-government organisation in Sunyani.
They also bemoaned poor condition of the environment worrying about indiscriminate littering and dumping of plastic waste and rubbish on the streets, markets, bus terminals and other public places.
The stakeholders emphasized the need for parents to sensitize their children on proper waste and sanitation management and called on the city authorities to place dustbins at vantage points for refuse collection.
Their concerns highlight the need for a multi-faceted approach towards addressing the poor sanitation and possible health hazards including improving waste management infrastructure and sensitizing the masses on responsible waste disposal practices.
They also discussed extensively and to find lasting solutions to the growing teenage pregnancy, and lauded the adolescent clinic which would strengthen healthcare and support systems for young people
Earlier in a welcoming address, Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer of GloMeF explained that the establishment of the Adolescent Clinic and the Digital Hub was in line with the ‘Resilient City for Adolescents (RC4A) project being implemented by the foundation.
The Swiss Bortnar Foundation is funding the implementation of the 300,000 Pound Sterlings and three-year project which sought to improve the lives of the adolescent.
Mr Ahenu urged parents to educate their children about sex, saying that would help control the rising trend of teenage pregnancy in the Metropolis.
