Sokode (V/R), March 28, GNA – Sokode Senior High Technical School (SOSTECH) has officially reopened following a temporary closure by the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The closure was due to violent clashes between students and residents of the Sokode community.
A special committee, tasked with investigating the February 23rd incident, submitted its interim report to the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu.
The report detailed the circumstances surrounding the unrest, which led to injuries, including that of a journalist, and significant tensions between the school and the local community.
One of the key recommendations of the committee was the reopening of the school on March 20, 2025, under strict conditions to ensure peace.
The reopening was made possible on March 24 after local chiefs and key stakeholders provided assurances of maintaining harmony between students and residents.
On February 23, 2025, REGSEC ordered the closure of SOSTECH after a violent confrontation erupted between students and Sokode-Gborgame residents.
The clash resulted in multiple injuries and disruptions, prompting authorities to intervene to prevent further escalation.
Speaking after receiving the committee’s report, Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, expressed appreciation for the committee’s swift and diligent work and assured the public that the government would act based on the findings to prevent future conflicts.
“We will thoroughly review all recommendations and work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of students, school staff, and the community,” he stated.
The minister added that while the school had been reopened, investigations into the causes of the violence were still ongoing, and anyone found culpable will face the necessary legal consequences.
As part of efforts to prevent future incidents, REGSEC and the school’s management had engaged local chiefs, opinion leaders, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen security measures and foster better relations between students and community members.
The reopening of SOSTECH is a positive step towards restoring normalcy and ensuring that students can continue their academic activities in a peaceful and conducive environment.
