Sunyani, (Bono), March 28, GNA-The Annual Ramadan prayers have slowed down buying and selling in the Sunyani Central Business District enclave, traders and market women complained on Friday.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm) and communal prayer (salah), a month which the Quran is believed to have been revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.
During round visits, the traders and market women told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) market survey in Sunyani that their daily sales and profit had been affected badly.
However, some of them said they were hopeful that business would pick up, as the Muslims end the annual prayer.
Comparatively, Eric Asamoah, a salesman at one of the popular shoe shops in the enclave said this year’s Ramadan had had huge toll on their businesses.
But, Davidoff Yeboah, a provision shop keeper said he anticipated a brisk business next week, saying “that’s always the situation every year.”
A dealer in wax print, Madam Diana Serwaa also told the GNA that, “buying and selling have been slow since January,” and complained about high taxes and import duties which were collapsing their businesses.
She therefore called on the government to do something about the high taxes and do more to tackle the depreciation of the Ghana cedi too.
