The third runner-up went to PRESEC Staff Basic five and received GHc 3,000, desktop and monitor, certificate, a plaque, branded T-shirts and set of stationery.

Dr Hugh Brown, the Chief Executive Forestry Commission, said the competition was held as part of activities to mark the International Day of Forests, which falls on March 21.

The Day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees in sustaining life on earth.

The theme: “Forests and Foods” aims to highlight the critical role forests play in the production of food for the country.

Dr Brown said the competition was a learning platform for both the contestants and the other students to listen and to cheer the contestants on.

“This is because I strongly believe that a lot of research work and learning has gone into the preparatory processes, which has enriched the wealth of knowledge of the pupils on forests and related issues,” he said.

He said the FC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and other stakeholders, in addition to the competition held an awareness creation and sensitization programme for seven schools along the Ayi Mensah – Amrahia stretch.

The idea was to bring the youth on board to inculcate in them the values of forest conservation.

The knowledge acquired, he stressed, would help all the students to make informed decisions in preserving the forest landscape of the country.

Forests in Ghana have come under severe attacks over the past years, due to illegal mining, illegal logging, and bushfires,  among others.

These actions have led to forest degradation and deforestation, which call for proactive approaches to solving these problems.

He announced that on Friday March 21, the government would launch the Tree for Life Restoration Initiative at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

The Project aims to embark on transformational landscape restoration efforts to heal and harness the environment.
