Oti Regional Director of Health Services pleads for specialist support

By Kingsley Mamore

Nsuta-Jasikan (O/R), March 20, GNA – Dr. Osei Kuffour Afreh, the Oti Regional Director of Health Services, has appealed to the Director-General of Ghana Health Service (GHS) for the deployment of an obstetrician gynecologist to the region.

He made the appeal during the 2024 annual performance review meeting held in Nsuta-Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region.

The call for support came amidst concerns over the region’s high maternal mortality rate, which has seen 40 recorded deaths in recent times.

In his keynote address, he said the region’s healthcare facilities were struggling to cope with the complexity of maternal health cases due to a severe shortage of specialized skills.

The Director emphasized that the absence of an obstetrician gynecologist had left the region’s healthcare providers without the necessary expertise to handle high risk pregnancies and complications.

Dr Afreh said the deployment of an obstetrician gynecologist to the Oti Region would be a significant step towards addressing this challenge and improving maternal health outcomes.

“We are doing our best with the resources we have, but we urgently need an obstetrician gynecologist to support our healthcare providers, we cannot continue to lose previous lives due to the lack of specialized care,” Dr Afreh added.
