Akropong (E/R) March 16, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised an inter-school quiz competition in Akropong-Akuapem to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence anniversary in Akropong-Akuapem.

Participating schools included Methodist Junior High School, Presbyterian Basic Junior School, Salem Presbyterian basic Junior High School and Okuapemman Basic School, all in Akropong, Akuapem.

The idea was to digress from the usual march pass at a park square. The event was sponsored by Never Thirst Natural Water, Mon Coeur Books & Stationaries as well as Akuapem North Municipal Assembly.

In her welcoming address the Head of NCCE in Akuapem North Municipal, Mad. Benedicta Duvor said in relation with the President’s idea of departing from the routine independent anniversary that has been going on for years, thereby creating huge spending on public purse.

However, her outfit decided to organise a modest inter-school quiz competition among 4 selected schools in Akropong, the municipal capital.

She said after consultations with the regional office and assurance from Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, the commission finally decided to organise the event purely on the 1992 constitutions of Ghana. The idea was to ensure that young school children imbibe and assimilate the civic rights and responsibilities of the citizenry.

She called on all participants to pay rapt attention during the programme for the event does not only serve the purpose of a competition but also to acquire knowledge.

Interacting with participants, the MCD of Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, Alhaji Shamrock Gafaru advised the children to devote time towards their books and distant themselves from bad friends and habits, capable of jeopardizing their future.

He also persuaded the youth to refrain from all manner of drug abuse which has now been on the rampage, and a common practice among the youth. He was of the view that once they get accustomed to these illicit drugs, were capable of opening the flood gates to other social vices and eventually, destroying their future.

He asked them to be good role models in the quest of mentoring these adolescents to achieve a better future. He asked the school children to take the 1992 Constitution serious and that all schools should provide every child with an abridged constitution for him or her to be abreast with the rules, laws, and the fundamental human rights of the land.

The Municipal GES Director, Mr Laurence Dzah and the Representative of the Eastern Regional NCCE Director, assured the schools in the municipality of their unflinching supports any time they were called upon and urged them to play their roles well to remedy the fallen standard of education in the area.

At the end of the quiz contest, Presbyterian Basic School in Akropong emerged as champion for the NCCE, 68th Independence Day Inter-Basic School Quiz Competition, 2025 with 56 points. Okuapemman Basic School, Methodist Basic School and Salem Presbyterian Basic School came second, third and fourth, respectively.

For their efforts, each school received a certificate of participation while the winner took home a trophy to be defended next year.
