Misornu Safety Center urges IGP to implement reforms

Accra, March 23, GNA – The Misornu Safety Center has called on the newly-appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to initiate comprehensive reforms in the Ghana Police Service to address contemporary security challenges.

In a statement signed by its Founder, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rtd) David Eklu, the Centre described Mr Yohonu’s appointment as a crucial step towards ensuring an effective and accountable police force, while congratulating him on his well-earned feat.

It commended President John Dramani Mahama for making a bold decision to strengthen security leadership in the country.

“The Misornu Safety Center is particularly hopeful that the new IGP will take a deeper look at what police reforms are appropriate and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders,” the statement read.

Among the key areas requiring urgent attention, the Centre highlighted the need for a well-structured crime prevention strategy that incorporates effective communication and public engagement. It urged the Police Administration to develop open channels for stakeholder communication and make transparency a core operational tool.

The Centre also commended the IGP for his initial efforts in strengthening Police public relations and resuming regular communication with the media and the public at various levels of the service. It, however, cautioned journalists against pressuring Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) to disclose sensitive information that could compromise national security.

Reiterating its support for the Police Administration, the Centre pledged to work with the IGP to design innovative solutions that would position the Police Service as a proactive, problem-solving institution.
