Accra, March 3, GNA – The University of Ghana general canteen and market, popularly known as ‘Bush Canteen” has not been gutted down by fire as reported in some traditional and social media outlets.
Instead, a refrigeration Mechanic container got burnt in the premises of the Estate Organisation at the University.
This came to light when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Bush Canteen in Legon to ascertain the truth or otherwise of it.
The GNA visit revealed that no part of the Bush Canteen had been destroyed by any fire, but rather a refrigeration Mechanic shop which was behind the PDMS Office in the Estate Organisation yard in Legon.
A worker who pleaded anonymity with the GNA said although a report was yet to be produced, they were suspecting an electrical fault sparked fire on that fateful night burning fridges and other electrical equipment awaiting repairs.

He said the Legon Ghana National Fire Tender which was stationed behind the Refrigeration Mechanic Container, however managed to douse the flames within a short time.
He said the fire was earlier exacerbated by the explosion of a gas cylinder at the shop, but the timely intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service saved the situation.
